How Does a Chiropractor Treat Car Accident Injuries?
Chiropractic care services improve your health and strengthen your body.
A small misalignment (Subluxation) can only get worse with time, so addressing this injury quickly can mean a faster recovery time and fewer health problems down the road. Addressing the spine’s alignment should be the #1 priority for restoring the body’s nerve flow so that proper healing can occur.
Chiropractors are the only healthcare professionals trained to specifically detect and correct vertebral subluxations (misalignment of the vertebrae that puts pressure on the nerves creating nerve interference). Our staff of chiropractors are well versed in the correction of subluxations, utilizing corrective methods, extension traction procedures, and devices which are the only true evidence-based methods that have been shown to statistically and clinically improve the amount of cervical lordosis.
By taking full health & neurological assessments, our chiropractor will devise a full-body solution that treats not only the site of your injury but other problem areas in your body. The goal is nothing less than total health.

Knowledge is power and knowing what to do makes a difference.
Unfortunately, most people have been involved in a car crash or motor vehicle collision (MVC) at some point in their lives. Whether it was a total loss or a small fender bender, MVC’s can cause a multitude of problems to your health and nervous system.
The aftermath of an accident is stressful, scary, and often painful, especially if an injury was involved. The amount of stress your body deals with, physically, emotionally, mentally, and hormonally, can be overwhelming. Your spine acts as the base and support for your entire body as well as houses and protects the vital nervous system. When involved in a car accident, your body undergoes stresses that can throw your spine out of proper, ‘normal’ alignment. This can cause issues such as pain, dizziness, arm pain and begin the process of degenerative arthritis in the spine.
Accidents take everyone by surprise, and it is crucial to take an immediate action to ensure the least possible damage since you could experience lingering issues for years to come. Luckily, exceptional chiropractic care can help your body heal from these injuries, minimize long-term damage to your health, calm stress and anxiety as well while putting you back on the path to a normal life.
How Do Car Accidents Cause Injury?
At first, a small accident may seem insignificant, but the truth is that down the road, people tend to experience symptoms such as slight headaches or neck pain that usually lead to even more severe problems.
One of the most common injuries during a car wreck is referred to as ‘Whiplash Injuries”. A whiplash injury occurs when the neck is forcefully thrown in a whiplike motion, forward and backward. This injury is most common in car accidents but can also occur during a fall or any other kind of impact to the head. The extreme motions involved overstretch the connective tissue throughout the neck including ligaments, muscles, and nerves leading to the development of spinal subluxations. Whiplash side effects tend to be delayed and lead to chronic spine and pain issues.
Common symptoms include:
- Headaches (particularly tension headaches starting at the base of the skull.
- Stiffness and pain in the neck, arms, back, and/or shoulders
- Neurological symptoms such as balance issues, tingling, shooting pain, and muscle weakness
- Neck and shoulder muscle spasms
- Sleep disorders
- Trouble concentrating, mood swings, depression and/ or anxiety
- Concussive symptoms
Nearly a third of people that experience whiplash end up reporting a long-term disability. Plus, a significant number of people that experience whiplash suffer from chronic symptoms that ultimately affect their quality of life.
What most people don’t realize is the role that the CERVICAL LORDOIS (natural curvature in your neck) plays in both the extent of the initial injury and the long-term repercussions. The forces of a car accident can be extreme, even in minor fender benders.
This can put a serious strain on the muscles, tendons, ligaments, connective tissues, and other structures in your neck and spine. Strains in the back or neck, caused by bodily tissues whipping back and forth and tearing or pulling, can become very painful if unaddressed and further aggravated by use.
In many car accidents, the force of the impact causes the bones in the spine to shift and move out of alignment. This misalignment is known as Vertebral Subluxation Complex which causes interference to the nervous system leading to discomfort, pain, and malfunctioning of bodily systems (because different systems are affected by each vertebra). If left uncorrected, subluxations can reduce range of motion, pain, lower immune functioning, and many other secondary conditions.
Concerning the extent of initial injury, researchers have found that having a well-preserved cervical lordosis actually prevents neck tissue damage to the sensitive cervical spine ligaments.1 In contrast, the same researchers identified that straightened cervical curves and, worse yet, reversed (kyphotic) cervical curves predisposed to more severe cervical spine tissue injuries due to more extreme forces acting on the neck during the exact same MVC circumstances.
Since having a straight or reversed cervical curve puts you at a higher risk of having more serious injuries should you be involved in an MVC, It’s is in your best interest to rehabilitate the shape and amount of your cervical lordosis. So the best thing to do before or after an MVC is to get checked by a chiropractor.
